The Conference of FAO, at its Sixth Session, in 1951, directed that available information on the forest resources of all countries of the world should, at five-year intervals, be collected and published. A first inventory had been carried out in 1947/48. Accordingly, a second enquiry was undertaken in, 1953. The results are published in this volume; the first of what has become a regular 5 year update of forest resources.
Compared with the first enquiry, this inventory records considerable progress in the scope and reliability of the figures reported; indeed, for some countries the progress has been remarkable. Nevertheless; the material has its limitations, described in the text.
